Loan Payment Calculators: The Basics of Any Installment Loan

These eight calculators cover the everyday questions borrowers ask about installment loans. Find a payment, compare two offers, add up the lifetime cost including fees, see where a loan stands mid-term, split a payment into interest and principal, price a deferral, weigh a credit line against a loan, or size payments weekly through annually. Each one uses the same amortization math, applied to a different decision you might be facing right now.

What do loan payment calculators tell you?

They turn a loan amount, interest rate and term into the fixed periodic payment, the total interest and the total repaid. The more specialized ones add a twist: a second offer to compare, payments already made, fees, a deferral period, an interest-only line or a different payment frequency.

Which basic loan calculator answers your question?

Shopping for a new loan: start with the loan calculator, then the comparison tool if you have two offers and the total-cost tool if fees differ. Already repaying: the remaining-balance tool and the payment breakdown show your position and the interest still ahead.

Facing a specific feature: use the deferral calculator for delayed first payments, the credit line calculator for interest-only borrowing and the frequency calculator to match payments to your paycheck.

Loan Basics: FAQs

How do I calculate a monthly payment by hand?

Divide the annual rate by 12 for the monthly rate r, count the months n, then compute P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1). A spreadsheet's payment function does the same thing. The calculators here run the formula instantly and show the steps in a worked example.

What is the difference between an installment loan and a line of credit?

An installment loan gives you a lump sum repaid in equal payments over a fixed term, so the balance reaches zero on schedule. A line of credit lets you draw, repay and draw again up to a limit, often with interest-only minimum payments. The credit line calculator compares the two on the same amount.

Why does my loan balance drop slowly at first?

Early payments go mostly to interest because the balance is at its highest. As principal is repaid, less interest is charged and more of each payment reduces the balance. The payment-breakdown and remaining-balance calculators show this shift for your own loan. Extra payments made early in the term save the most interest.

What costs are not included in a basic loan payment?

Taxes, insurance, optional add-ons such as credit insurance, late fees and most closing costs are not part of the principal-and-interest payment. Upfront fees affect the cost of the loan, not the payment, unless they are added to the balance. Ask the lender for a full list of charges before you sign, and add them to your budget alongside the payment.

How do I know if a loan offer is good?

Compare it with at least one other offer on the same amount and term, using both total interest and APR. Check fees, prepayment penalties and whether the rate is fixed. The comparison and total-cost calculators turn those factors into dollar figures you can line up. Also check the lender's reputation and customer service.

Is it smarter to choose a shorter loan term?

A shorter term costs less in total interest but needs a higher payment. It suits a budget with room to spare. A longer term gives breathing room at a higher lifetime cost. Many borrowers pick a term with a comfortable payment and pay extra when they can, if the loan allows it.

What happens to interest if I skip or defer payments?

On most loans interest keeps accruing, and unpaid interest may be added to the balance. Repayment then starts from a larger amount, raising the payment or the total interest. The deferral calculator shows the full cost of a no-payment period. Paying even the interest during a deferral keeps the balance from growing.

Do weekly or biweekly payments save money?

Only a little if they are sized to the same payoff date. The well-known savings come from paying more in total each year, such as half the monthly amount every two weeks. The frequency calculator shows both effects. Choosing a schedule that matches your paycheck can still make budgeting easier, even if the interest saving is small.
